Climate Change Mitigation & Carbon Management
Marbek combines 25 years of applied engineering experience in energy management with a thorough understanding of domestic and international policies and programs on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management and trading. We have experience delivering domestic and international climate change services to all levels of governments and non-profits, including:
- Policies, programs, and projects: Development and delivery of measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from local, regional and global scales
- Foreign project support: Help international clients generate credits under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI), as defined under the Kyoto Protocol
- Inventories, planning and analysis: Development of greenhouse gas emissions inventories and mitigation action plans
- Climate change economics: Potential market responses and estimated impacts of greenhouse gas emission-reduction policy, programs, technologies and measures on economic, social and environmental factors
- Resources and tools: Research and development of information products relating to GHG emissions and climate change
- GHG verification: Provide third-party assurance of GHG emissions reports and offsets for voluntary and compliance purposes (Alberta Specified Gas Emitters Regulation, British Columbia GHG Reporting Regulation, California Air Resources Board GHG Reporting Regulation)
- Conflict of interest policy: It is ICF Marbek’s policy to avoid actual or potential Conflict of Interest (COI) situations, and to make full and open disclosures, as required, relating to the existence of any actual, potential, or appearance of a COI. It is the responsibility of every member of ICF Marbek’s Verification Body to avoid actual or potential COI situations or threats to independence associated with each GHG verification engagement. Our COI procedure has been established to ensure all project decisions are based on objective evidence obtained through the GHG verification process, with due consideration to prevent inappropriate influence by other interests. We initiate our COI procedure at the outset of each verification, and monitor COI throughout the verification cycle. The process enables us to ensure the independence, impartiality, and objectivity of ICF’s Verification Body, and personnel.
For corporate GHG management plans we also offer the following:
- Understand international and domestic emission trading schemes
- Understand various emission permits and credits, and the processes for creating, exchanging and using them
- Identify relevant aspects for your business
- Acquire necessary emission permits (e.g., as a “Large Final Emitter”)
- Devise a compliance plan for truing up your emissions
- Devise a monitoring and reporting plan for your emissions
- Identify opportunities for emission reductions
- Develop a strategy for achieving emission reductions
- Develop emission offset projects
- Prepare documentation to validate offset projects
- Monitor and report your offsets
- Select brokers to market your offset credits
- Provide third-party assurance of your GHG inventory
